Maui, Hawaii - Nicki & Tim's Wedding!

Maui
March 26 - March 29

Our friends Nicki Spencer and Tim Purtill got engaged at the end of 2011 and their wedding plans started to progress from that point onward.  Tim is from Melbourne, Australia and Nicki is from Atlanta, so they decided to get married in Maui, Hawaii which is roughly half way between the two countries.  As soon as they set their date, Gene and I began to plan their wedding into our sailing sabbatical.  There was no way we were going to miss their wedding - and I just happened to be one of her bridesmaids - so we were excited to plan our second trip to Hawaii, and definitely making a second trip down the Kalalau trail in Kauai.  After all, we named our boat after the Kalalau Valley in Kauai, so we figured this was the perfect tribute to our Kalalau.

We spent the majority of our four days in Maui hanging out with our friends and the other wedding party guests.  Tim and Nicki got married at Merriman's which is a restaurant overlooking the Napili Bay in the Lahaina area of Maui, north west part of the island.  The wedding was held on March 28th in the evening, and it was the perfect setting for a Hawaiian wedding.  They got married outside overlooking the bay as the sun was setting with humpback whales breaching in the background.  This time of year is the humpback whale season in Hawaii, and there were whales breaching, flipping their tails, and spouting water every you look just off the beach for the entire time we were in Maui.  It really made for an incredible backdrop to the wedding ceremony.

The Wedding

This was the beach behind The Mauian hotel where the wedding party was staying.

We drove by this anchorage in Lahaina - so many catamarans anchored out there.
We were missing the boat as we drove by this.
