Tour of Kathmandu, Nepal

September 28

We spent our last day in Nepal touring Kathmandu and having dinner at our favorite restaurant (2 nights in a row!).  Here are pictures from our last day.

Great restaurant in Thamel area of Kathmandu.  Here's Gene's Filet with mint sauce, $7!

Big Beers! Everest and Tuborg are the best Nepalese beers.

The Love Temple

We visited Swayambhunath which is an ancient religious complex atop a hill in Kathmandu Valley.  It is also called the Monkey Temple becausue of the holy monkeys that live there.

This pool was built for the monkeys to play in.  The monkeys would climb up the cement wall in the back and jump, dive, and cannon ball into the pool.  It was really entertaining to watch!

The next place we visited was the Pashupatinath temple, one of the most significant Hindu Temples of Shiva in the world.  The temple is located on the bank of the Bagmati river where many Hindu cremations take place every day.

Here's a body being cremated on the edge of the river.

People coming to pay their respects to those that have passed away on this day.

Here are two more bodies preparing to be cremated (in the orange sheets).  Generally, the oldest son is supposed to light the fire.

Rum Doodle, famous restaurant / bar in Kathmandu for Everest base camp trekkers and Everest climbers.  Trekkers / climbers can sign a foot and they pin it up somewhere in the bar.
