Laguna Torre, El Chalten, Argentina

November 16

We decided to take the bus to El Chalten in Los Glaciares National Park for a few days to do some hiking in Argentine Patagonia.  El Chalten is famous for it's impressive views of Mount Fits Roy.  Mount Fits Roy is the logo for the Patagonia clothing company.

With our friends Ely and Bell, we took the bus from El Calafate and arrived in El Chalten later that evening.  El Calafate is a very small town and very young (the village was build in 1985 to help secure the border dispute with Chile).  We checked into our hostel on the main road and started to make plans for our three days in El Chalten.  There are some amazing hikes in the area, but we were also excited to experience Ice Climbing / repelling on the Viedma Glacier.  One of the guys we met at our hostel in El Calafate recommended that we do this activity in El Chalten.  We were sold once we saw his amazing video.

We spent our first full day in El Chalten hiking the Laguna Torres trail (Gene, Bell, and I).  The hike is about 12 miles total (6 miles out and back) and traverses beautiful scenery, rivers, waterfalls, beautiful vistas, glaciers, peaks, and lakes.

Start of the trail...

Rio de las Vueltas

Las Torres just behind the clouds

Here's the glacier - probably the best view we had of it all day.  The clouds picked up quite a bit later in the day blocking our view.

Beautiful shot of the Rio de las Vueltas

Our destination - Laguna Torres.
We spent about an hour here enjoying the views as we ate our lunch.

One of the many gorgeous waterfalls

End of the hike, walking back to the town.
Here's the view of El Chalten from the hilltop at the trailhead.
