Fort De France, Martinique

Friday, February 22

After spending the previous two days in Case Pilot, Martinique getting our engines serviced and repaired by the Volvo expert, Frank Agren, we sailed south to Fort De France area.  Fort De France is the capital of Martinique and the largest and liveliest city in the Windwards.  It almost seems out of place when you arrive because it really is a downtown city atmosphere complete with skyscrappers, business folks dressed in suit and tie, endless streets filled with clothing shops, shoe stores, bars, restaurants, even a department store.

The Fort De France Bay is huge and comprised of many mini-bays along the coast.  We decided to anchor in the bay across from the actual city of Fort De France in Anse Mitan which is part of the Trois Illets area.  After anchoring, we decided to head over to Fort De France to pick up a new shower pump (the starboard shower pump died on us a few days before), and a new traveler sheet since our old one was seriously frayed after the crossing from Dominica.  We realized that the dingy ride across the bay was a bit too choppy and pretty far, so we decided to take the ferry across the bay to Fort De France which actually turned out to be really beautiful / relaxing and inexpensive.  We got some great pictures of the city as we arrived via the ferry.

After purchasing our supplies at the big marine chandlery store, we walked around the streets of Fort De France.  I hadn't seen an actual shoe store in months, so it was fun to do some window shopping!  We eventually headed back to Anse Mitan via the ferry and back to the boat.  We decided that we would move the boat to the anchorage just next to the main city of Fort De France the next day so we could easily pick up our friends, Dana and Andrea Stelk, that were coming to visit us for the next week.
