Whale Sighting off the West Coast of St. Lucia

Friday, March 8

We left the Rodney Bay marina on Friday morning and decided to sail south back to the Soufriere anchorage to meet up with our friends, Bob and Christine, whom we met in Martinique.  Bob and Christine are big hikers, so we had planned on doing a hike with them when they arrived in St. Lucia, and the best hikes in St. Lucia are the Pitons - Gros Piton and Petit Piton.

Since it was such a calm day, very little wind and waves, we spotted several whales on the way down!  Most of them we could only see in the distance, primarily the water spouting from their blow hole.  We'd watch the area where the water spouted up, and eventually we'd see the tails come up.  We tried to sail in the direction of the whales, hoping to get a closer look.  At one point, when we thought we'd lost track of them, we heard some movement in the water behind the boat, so we turn and see this huge mass approaching the surface that looked just like a submarine.  It turned out to be a whale just off the stern of the boat!

Here's the play by play of the whale surfacing...
